Irish Sheet Music for St. Patrick’s Day!
Posted on Mar 16, 2009 by Monica in Holidays
Did you know that St. Patrick’s Day has been observed as both a secular and non-secular holiday? The religious feast day honoring St. Patrick has been celebrated by the Irish for over 1,000 years.
Although the first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City in 1762, it wasn’t until the late twentieth century that St. Patrick’s Day became recognized as a secular holiday.
Irish sheet music, similar to songs found in a St. Patrick’s Day sheet music repertoire, offers a broad range of musical styles attributed to the Irish culture. In recent years, Celtic theme weddings have popularized songs like The Irish Wedding Song and the Irish Blessing Song. From weddings to marches like the energetic song When Johnny Comes Marching Home, we hope you find an Irish song to sing or play for St. Patrick’s Day. If you need some ideas, here are a few more songs that we recommend:
- St. Patrick’s Day by The Wolfe Tones
- When Irish Eyes are Smiling, a traditional song.
- Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral, a traditional Irish Lullaby.
- My Wild Irish Rose, an Irish love song.
- It’s a Great Day for the Irish by Judy Garland from the film “Little Nellie Kelly”
We’d also like to extend a hearty congratulations to our Irish sheet music contest winner. We awarded a copy of the O’Neill’s Music of Ireland songbook to @guitarified on Friday for being the fastest Twitterer in the West!
What are some of your favorite Irish songs? Are there any that you would recommend for brides interested in a Celtic wedding theme?
We hope you have the chance to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the music of the Irish. We invite you to download Irish sheet music today!
