Celebrate the New Year by dancing to a waltz or a tango! This month, we’re offering a free piano sheet music download of a Hungarian Dance composed by Brahms, and a Guitar Guru Session with corresponding guitar tab of the first published tango!

For January 2010, we are featuring a free piano sheet music download of the WALTZ FOR PIANO OP. 39, NO 15 in Ab composed by Johannes Brahms.

This particular waltz is part of a collection of works that were composed by Brahms in the mid-to-late 1800s. The pieces are often referred to as the Hungarian Dances and this particular waltz is one of the most popular and the easiest to play in the collection.

This month’s free Guitar Guru Session and guitar tab is the tango entitled EL CHOCLO. Composed by A. G. Villodo in the late 1800s, EL CHOCLO was the “first” published tango. Translated to “The Corn,” this tango was first published in Argentina, and later published with lyrics which are not included in our version.

I Am So Glad on Christmas Eve was originally written in Norwegian in the late 1850s and later translated to English. As a result, this song goes by several titles including: I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve, I Am So Happy on Christmas Eve and How Glad I Am Each Christmas Eve. The carol originates from Inger Marie Wexelsen’s publication of three children’s books. Peder Knudsen wrote the music for this song, which is regarded as a children’s Christmas carol.

The First Noel is a traditional English Christmas carol of unknown origin. Some claim the song may have been written as early as the thirteenth century. The first known print publication of this Christmas carol originates from the early nineteenth century in a collection of Christmas carols entitled Some Ancient Christmas Carols. Like many carols, the full set of lyrics describe the Christian celebration of Christmas. Its repetitive refrain and popular melody have turned this into a widely popular Christmas carol that has been covered by several artists.

The Christmas carol What Child Is This? has an interesting history. The melody originates from a traditional English folk tune that was written in the 1500s. This song, which originally had nothing to do with the Christmas holiday, was known as Greensleeves. It wasn’t until the 1800s, when William Chatterton Dix wrote the lyrics for What Child Is This?, that the melody for the song Greensleeves was performed as a popular Christmas carol. Today, many people still confuse the original title of Greensleeves with What Child Is This?

The song Here We Come A-Caroling is also referred to as Here We Come A-Wassailing and The Wassail Song. Originating in England, this song was part of a unique holiday tradition that stretched from Christmas to New Year’s Day. Carolers, which may have included orphans and beggars, would sing this song in the hopes that a generous homeowner would offer them a chance to warm up by the fire or provide them with a cup of wassail. Wassail is a hot drink that may include spices, fruit juices, beer or ale, and was served as a way to warm up guests on the coldest of nights.
