Bands and Musicians on Twitter

This is a long list of bands and musicians who are on Twitter whose musical styles range from pop to classical. By no means is this a comprehensive list, but as far as we can tell, these accounts represent the “official” band or performer. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell whether or not the Twitter ID is actually the person you’re looking for, but we’ve done our research and believe these to be accurate. If you find an inaccuracy, please comment below and we will remove from this list.

You’ll notice that there is a healthy mix of indie, popular and legendary music icons in this list. Don’t be afraid to check out bands or performers you’ve never heard of; many of these Twitter accounts have a link to their MySpace page so you can check out their music. Today’s unsigned band might very well be tomorrow’s superstar!

Of course, I love a lot of KC and The Sunshine Band’s music. Over the years their songs have been featured on a number of movie soundtracks including Disney’s Flubber, a film that featured “Get Down Tonight” in the movie.

Morton Sobotnick’s Creating Music Games – This site features three, interactive games that help beginners distinguish musical strains, develop their ability to hear different pitches and recognize rhythms. Blocks and colors are drawn in a cartoon-like style, and would be attractive to kids who want to get into music.

Music Tech Teacher’s Music Games – Several dozen music games are featured on this website and range from music quizzes to theory and music “word” games. Designed from an instructional point-of-view, many of these music games help expand a musician’s knowledge to help them read music in addition to honing their practical skills.
Level of Music Ability: Beginner to Advanced
Perfect for: Adults or Kids. Must have good reading comprehension.

Neave Games Simon – Inspired by the original Simon Says, this is a browser-based music game where you have to match the tones played by clicking on the buttons with your mouse. Here’s a larger version of the memory music game that’s easier to use.

Sheppard Software Music Memory Game – This game features a “C” scale where every note corresponds to “Do, Re, Mi” and a color. More advanced than the four-button Simon we described above, this music game gave some of us a real challenge. One of seven notes will play and you repeat their tone by clicking on each note. The game gets very challenging, very quickly!

Perfect for: Musicians who want to do more “ear training.”

DSO Kids Memory Game – Based on the old Memory card game from days gone by, this browser-based game has three, different levels of play. The first two levels operate by encouraging you to match two music symbols together. The “advanced” level asks you to match the music symbol with its corresponding written name.

Perfect for: Musicians learning how to recognize music symbols.

While there’s no doubt summer is over, many of us are still hoping for that last bit of golden warmth to shine through our windows. I’ve been listening to the song "The Sky is Crying" which was popularized by Stevie Ray Vaughn. Composed by Elmore James in 1960, the song was also performed by Albert King. I love how the guitar riff perfectly complements the singer’s lyrics, which is one of several reasons why we’ve offered The Sky is Crying on Guitar Guru. I think it’s a great way to show off a guitarist’s skills, because in this song, the composition has a nice balance of lyrics and technique.

I asked a few of our other staffers here for other end-of-summer songs, and I got some great recommendations that I hadn’t thought of. Ain’t no Sunshine by Bill Withers is another great blues song that I’m sure you’ve heard before. We also have the guitar sheet music for Summer’s End by Foo Fighters, which is a little more modern than songs like ‘Tis the Last Rose of Summer with lyrics by Thomas Moore.
