forest-sunriseDo you remember the song Morning Has Broken? The popular melody performed by Cat Stevens in the early 1970s was originally based on a song by Scottish composer Mary MacDonald (1789 – 1872). The original lyrics for her hymn entitled Leanabh an Aigh were written in Gaelic. When the hymn was translated into English by Lachlan Macbean, the song title was renamed Bunessan after a Scottish village close to Mary MacDonald’s hometown of Ardtun. Believe it or not, the song was originally associated with a hymn called Child in the Manger. (1)

Oscars Sheet Music for Nominated Movies

Oscars Sheet Music for Nominated Movies

Posted on Feb 20, 2009 by Monica.

What do movies like Benjamin Button, the Dark Knight or Wall-E have in common? If you guessed the Oscars, then you guessed right! We took a look into our sheet music vault to see what songs we had for these fabulous films.

wrestler-soundtrackEveryone is talking about The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke. The soundtrack features many bands and artists from the era of big hair bands. Remember Cinderella? We have sheet music for Don’t Know What You Got (Until It’s Gone). The song can only be described as one of the best “rock” ballads of its time. We’ve gotten quite a few requests for the song from Bruce Springsteen, and we’re still waiting to hear back from the publisher on that particular tune.

revolutionary-road-soundtrackThe film Revolutionary Road also got an Oscar nod. This movie, starring Leonardo di Caprio, Kate Winslet and Michael Shannon as “John Givings” is based on a novel written by Richard Yates.

Set in the mid-1950s, the music for the film includes songs like Crying in the Chapel by The Orioles and The Gypsy by The Ink Spots.

Congratulations to actress Kate Winslet for her Oscar. Kate won the award for Best Actress for her role in The Reader.

benbuttonLast week we highlighted sheet music from the Benjamin Button soundtrack, and talked a little bit about what makes the movie so unique. In our post we wrote, “The soundtrack for Benjamin Button includes original compositions by Alexandre Desplat, and offers a rich mix of jazz, blues and gospel undertones. Here’s a piece of movie trivia for you, too. The piano piece that Benjamin learns how to play in the movie is The Bethena Rag by Scott Joplin.” Click here to read more about Benjamin Button.

milk-soundtrackNow available on DVD, Milk starring Sean Penn, was a film about California’s first openly gay elected official who was later assassinated.

Everyday People by Sly and The Family Stone and Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation were two of the songs featured in this multi-Oscar nominated film.

Congratulations to Sean Penn for his Oscar-winning performance as Harvey Milk!

wall-e-soundtrackThe song Down to Earth from Wall-E was nominated for Best Song at the Oscars. We recently covered Wall-E in a post about sheet music for Down to Earth. We wrote: “This six-minute song was featured in the animated film Wall-E by Disney and Pixar Studios, and is a perfect compliment to a movie about this trash compactor robot. (His full name is Waste Allocation Load-Lifter Earth-Class. What a mouthful!)”

This week we’ve learned that the Academy Awards scaled back their song nomination category, to feature only three songs. The song already won a Grammy, and is the likely favorite to win at the Oscars. Peter Gabriel will not be performing at the Oscars in protest after learning that he would only be on stage for 65 seconds, even though his song is over six minutes long. You can read about Peter Gabriel Not Performing Out of Protest at Rollingstone.com.

Congratulations to the creators of Wall-E for their Oscar for Best Animated Film!

bolt-soundtrack-coverThe voices of Miley Cyrus and John Travolta star in this feature-length animated film about a dog who thinks he’s a superhero.

As we mentioned earlier today, we have sheet music for I Thought I Lost You by Miley Cyrus as well as nine other songs from this fun movie. Read about the movie Bolt and find fun freebies on Disney’s website!

dark-knight-soundtrackThe Dark Knight, starring Heath Ledger and Christian Bale, is a darker take on Gotham City’s hero, Batman. Superhero sheet music is always interesting to play and listen to, especially when an original score is created.

For this epic battle between Batman and the Joker, sheet music for the Dark Knight includes original compositions by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. We also have other songs for sheet music from Batman including the Batman theme, too!

Congratulations to the late Heath Ledger for his award-winning role as the Joker. Heath’s family accepted the award for “best supporting actor” on his behalf.

To find out more about these award nominees, visit The Oscars for more information. Musicnotes.com would like to extend our best wishes to all award nominees. Good Luck! We’ll be watching!

bolt-soundtrack-cover Have you seen Bolt yet? Nominated for an Academy award, this film is about a Hollywood action star dog who believes he has super powers! But does he? If you haven’t found out whether or not Bolt’s true super powers lie in his paws or in his heart, you’ll definitely want to rent this heart-warming tale about man’s best friend voiced by John Travolta.

Miley Cyrus lends her voice-acting and singing talents to the other main character in the film, Penny. Miley sings the song I Thought I Lost You, a song featured on the Bolt soundtrack and in the movie.

Now you can sing right along with Miley, or play sheet music from the movie Bolt. We have a number of songs from the film, including many selections from the musical score composed by John Powell. This Week on American Idol

Now in its eighth season, American Idol has moved past the audition phase and into the top 36. Performing in batches of twelve, there were some interesting song choices from the first American Idol group. Performances from the first group on American Idol included:

+ Alexis Grace’s soulful rendition of I Never Loved a Man by Aretha Franklin earned her a spot as an American Idol finalist.

+ A show-stopping version of Hero by Mariah Carey was sung by Danny Gokey. Danny was the clear favorite and it’s no surprise he’s also an American Idol finalist.

+ Ricky Braddy’s high tenor voice breathed new life into the pop song A Song For You by Leon Russell. He didn’t make the finals, which was a bit surprising because Ricky has an amazing voice.

+ Sung by American Idol finalist Michael Carver, I Don’t Want To Be by Gavin DeGraw was an interesting choice for the audition. This is a pretty complicated song to sing, because of its frequent pitch changes and fast tempo.

+ Casey Carlson didn’t make it in the finals with her rendition of Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by The Police. Would she have made it if she picked a different song? Maybe. Her performance is a good example of how the right song choice is extremely important for any audition.

For more American Idol sheet music and recaps, stay tuned until next week when more finalists are announced. Until then, we hope you practice your singing all week long. Maybe one of you will consider trying out for next year’s American Idol!

Christmas Sheet Music Featured on the Four Christmases Movie Soundtrack

Posted on Dec 04, 2008 by Monica.

The hot Christmas movie this season is called “Four Christmases.” This movie stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn as a couple who have avoided visiting their parents for the past three years. Here’s a little bit about the movie from the official Four Christmases website.

No one enjoys the holidays more than Brad and Kate.

Every December 25th, this happily unmarried, upscale San Francisco couple embark on a holiday tradition they have shared every year since they met—ditching their crazy families for a relaxing, fun-filled vacation in some sunny exotic locale.

There, sipping margaritas by the pool, they toast the season, knowing they have once again avoided the chaos and emotional fallout of their four respective households: divorced parents, squabbling siblings, out-of-control kids and all the simmering resentments and awkward moments that are the hallmarks of every family Christmas.

But not this year.–Four Christmases Website

There are several classic and traditional Christmas songs featured on the official soundtrack for Four Christmases that you might recognize. The soundtrack debuts early next week with eleven Christmas songs. If you’d like to play any of these selections, we have sheet music for nine of them.

Sheet Music featured in Four Christmases

If you enjoy playing Christmas sheet music and love Christmas movies, here’s a list of songs from the Four Christmases soundtrack that you might enjoy. Be sure to check the arrangement of the song to ensure it’s the one you want. Our sheet music typically comes in several arrangements for singers, guitarists and pianists for every level of musical ability, but we sometimes feature duets and other instruments, too!

  • (There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays – Immortalized by Italian crooner Perry Como, we offer several arrangements of this song including lyrics. The title is also known as “Home for the Holidays.”
  • Jingle Bell Rock – This is the same arrangement used in the movie, and our sheet music for this fun Christmas song also includes lyrics.
  • The Christmas Song – Did you know this song has also been sung by Mel Torme and Nat King Cole? Pick your arrangement to fit your musical preference.
  • Cool Yule – Sung by Louis Armstrong, we offer the sheet music for this song in book and “single sheet” (pre-printed) format.
  • I’ll Be Home for Christmas – This popular Christmas song has been immortalized by singers from Tony Bennett to Elvis Presley and BarlowGirl. Choose from 20 different arrangements.
  • White Christmas – Not only is this song featured in the movies White Christmas and Four Christmases, but it’s also currently featured in the limited-run of White Christmas on Broadway.
  • O Little Town of Bethlehem – Last but not least, this classic Christmas carol has been reinvented once again for Four Christmases. Choose from over 43 different arrangements of the song on our site to play or sing.

What are some of your favorite Christmas movies? Do you like classic black-and-white films like Miracle on 34th Street or more modern day movies like Elf?

If you love superheroes and science fiction, you probably are eagerly anticipating the March 6, 2009 release of “The Watchmen.” This movie is based on a graphic novel written by Alan Moore (V for Vendetta) and many fans can’t wait for the film to be released.

Watchmen takes place in an alternate history United States where the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. After government-sponsored superhero The Comedian is found murdered, the vigilante Rorschach warns his former colleagues of what he believes is a conspiracy to kill costumed heroes. As the story progresses, the protagonists discover that one of the heroes has devised a plan to stave off war between the United States and the USSR by carrying out a plan that will kill millions of innocent people. --SOURCE: Wikipedia

We’re very excited to announce that the second trailer for Watchmen has been released, and it features the song by UK artist, Muse. We’re working on the Guitar Guru version of this song, but we do have the vocals and guitar sheet music for Take a Bow by Muse. Twilight Soundtrack and Sheet Music for Twilight Playlist

Twilight Soundtrack and Sheet Music for Twilight Playlist

Posted on Nov 06, 2008 by Monica.

Twilight SoundtrackThe movie Twilight, based on the book series by author Stephenie Meyer, will debut in just a few weeks. The Twilight Soundtrack debuted as the number one selling soundtrack on Amazon on Tuesday, November 4th.

Music seems to be very important to author Stephenie Meyer, who was recently involved with the production of Jack’s Mannequin and their music video for The Resolution. The author had also created a Twilight music playlist on her site, and we have received a ton of customer requests related to music on the Twilight Soundtrack.

Sheet Music for Twilight

Based on the popularity of this upcoming movie and the number of customer requests we have been receiving, we wanted to let you know that we do have sheet music for Twilight. In fact, we have sheet music not only for songs featured in the film, but songs Stephenie listed on her website and for the music video she worked on as well.

If you are new to Musicnotes.com, you will need to download our sheet music viewer. This download allows you to view the song, listen to a sound byte of the sheet music to ensure it’s the one you want and also provides you with the ability to download sheet music right to your desktop or laptop. From there, you can either print out the music or play it from your screen.

Stephenie Meyer and Jack’s Mannequin

Jack’s Mannequin The Resolution – Twilight author Stephenie Meyer worked on the music video for this song. Read about Stephenie Meyer and Jack’s Mannequin “The Resolution” music video then sing or play along.

Sheet Music for Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Playlist

All of the songs listed were featured on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Playlist.

Sheet Music for Twilight Soundtrack

The sheet music for Twilight listed here is for a selection of songs featured on the Twilight Soundtrack.

Regarding Flute Sheet Music and other Instruments

Several of you have made requests for Twilight sheet music for flute and other instruments. If your instrument is in the Key of C, then piano and vocal sheet music will work for your instrument. Flutes are manufactured in the Key of C, so following the melody or vocal line will work for you, even if the melody line appears to be composed higher than what you are used to playing. How high you can play depends upon your aperture; if you can’t play a high “G” for example, many flutists will drop the melody an octave.

At this time, we are not sure if we will provide transpositions for other keys of Twilight sheet music. Our ability to offer transpositions of sheet music depends upon a number of factors, including what we are able to do based on licensing agreements with a publisher. If we are planning on offering additional keys, we will definitely let you know by updating this post and providing more information.

Interview with Carter Burwell

Read our interview with Carter Burwell, Composer and find out more about the man behind the music.

Sheet Music for River Flows in You by Yiruma

Many of you have mistakenly associated the song “River Flows in You by Yiruma” with Twilight. Carter Burwell explained the reason for the misconception in our interview with him, but we still continue to get many calls for this song from fans who believe it’s part of Twilight. Even though this song is not officially related to Twilight in any way shape or form, we know that you wanted to play this song because it inspired you. Now, for the first time in digital in the U.S., you can play River Flows in You by Yiruma.

Looking for Esme’s Favorite?

There have been a lot of comments regarding the song “Esme’s Favorite.” Like “River Flows in You” by Yiruma, this song is not part of the official Twilight soundtrack. We’ve been researching the history behind this song and how it’s become one of your favorites, so we can potentially offer legal sheet music for it. There’s a lot of confusion over who composed this song, so bear with us as we find the appropriate songwriter.

Thanks for your interest in Twilight sheet music, and as soon as we have the correct information we’ll let you know.

Send your Twilight Sheet Music Requests to Us!

Sheet Music for Superhero Movies and TV Shows

Superhero DogWhether you or your kids enjoy Marvel, DC Comics or other comic book companies like Boom Studios and Dark Horse Comics, it’s hard to miss the appeal of the superhero.

Of course, there are several reasons why we’re drawn to superheroes and superheroines. Whether it’s their super powers or their ability to fight crime, the modern superhero seems to be depicted a bit differently than the heroes of old. Take Mr. Incredible, for example. Instead of wondering whether or not he will ever grow old or get married, we watch him settle down with his wife, Elastigirl, and empathize with his struggles working a day job. In place of Mr. Incredible rescuing his demure wife and innocent kids, we cheer as the family of Incredibles work together to defeat Syndrome.
