Glee is back on the air, bringing you characters like the perfectionist Rachel Berry or the popular quarterback Finn. The story of the show is simple: Can the inexperienced Glee club hope to compete with the ever-popular cheerleading squad — the Cheerios — to reclaim their former glory? Will is planning to do whatever it takes to lift the glee club from obscurity and back into the spotlight again, by helping his students in any way he can. Presented with budget issues, marital troubles and school politics, Will needs a miracle to turn the group around.

Music on the show is a potpourri of songs from different decades, highlighting modern songs like Take A Bow, classic rock Don’t Stop Believin’, traditional glee club showtunes like Mr. Cellophane and more!

The show has been a hit with music lovers everywhere, and more than a few musicians and vocalists have been inspired to play songs from the show. For your convenience, we’ve put together a list of sheet music from the show Glee. The show airs every Wednesday, so be sure to check back for more songs!

In this week’s wrap-up, we talk about how talent shows are inspiring musicians everywhere to sing or play their instrument and provide you with some sheet music suggestions. We also reveal the winner of our own “talent” show, the Musicnotes.com YouPerform Contest for March 2009.

Britain’s Got Talent! Do you?

As we mentioned earlier this week in our press release entitled Susan Boyle Phenomenon Resonates in Sheet Music, “Britain’s Got Talent” singing sensation Susan Boyle has had a definite impact on sheet music. You’ve been so inspired by Susan Boyle’s performance of I Dreamed a Dream, that this single song from Les Miserables sheet music is one of your top downloads on Musicnotes.com.

That’s not the only performer that you’ve enjoyed, though. Competing for a chance to perform in front of the Queen, this past week Shaheen Jafargholi started singing the song Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Simon Cowell stopped him after the first few bars. Switching to the song Who’s Lovin’ You by the Jackson Five, this twelve-year old received a standing ovation. (Watch the video of Shaheen singing.) Another sensation was a music teacher playing an alto saxophone version of the song Somewhere from West Side Story named Julian Smith.

Looks like this talent show is inspiring more than just singers to offer their music to the world. How about you? What do you play?

Talent Show American Idol Continues to Impress You

Have you been following American Idol? This week was a big heart-breaker for Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds as they were eliminated from the show. Many of the songs sung by Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and all your favorite singers have inspired you to play the songs they’ve performed. Featured songs from our selection of American Idol sheet music for Season Eight include:

Hot Stuff by Donna Summer

Miley Cyrus lends her voice-acting and singing talents to the other main character in the film, Penny. Miley sings the song I Thought I Lost You, a song featured on the Bolt soundtrack and in the movie.

This Week on American Idol

Now in its eighth season, American Idol has moved past the audition phase and into the top 36. Performing in batches of twelve, there were some interesting song choices from the first American Idol group. Performances from the first group on American Idol included:

+ Alexis Grace’s soulful rendition of I Never Loved a Man by Aretha Franklin earned her a spot as an American Idol finalist.

+ A show-stopping version of Hero by Mariah Carey was sung by Danny Gokey. Danny was the clear favorite and it’s no surprise he’s also an American Idol finalist.

+ Ricky Braddy’s high tenor voice breathed new life into the pop song A Song For You by Leon Russell. He didn’t make the finals, which was a bit surprising because Ricky has an amazing voice.

+ Sung by American Idol finalist Michael Carver, I Don’t Want To Be by Gavin DeGraw was an interesting choice for the audition. This is a pretty complicated song to sing, because of its frequent pitch changes and fast tempo.

+ Casey Carlson didn’t make it in the finals with her rendition of Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by The Police. Would she have made it if she picked a different song? Maybe. Her performance is a good example of how the right song choice is extremely important for any audition.

For more American Idol sheet music and recaps, stay tuned until next week when more finalists are announced. Until then, we hope you practice your singing all week long. Maybe one of you will consider trying out for next year’s American Idol!

From wedding sheet music to popular love songs that highlight the best parts of your relationships, it’s easy to mark the milestones of your heart with a song. This Valentine’s Day, remember your greatest moments with older love songs like The Luckiest by Ben Folds, Because you Loved Me by Johnny Mathis or At Last by Etta James.

If you are building new memories, there are a couple newer love songs that are still popular among many music lovers. I’m Yours by Jason Mraz and Love Story by Taylor Swift continue to be really popular among Musicnotes.com customers and friends.

No matter what you’re playing or singing, we hope you find the love song that’s right for you this upcoming Valentine’s Day. Just like there’s a time for every season, remember there’s a song for every memory.

20% Off Guitar Guru Headsets for the PC and Reduced Shipping!

From now until the end of February, save big on Guitar Guru headsets. Not only do you get 20% off the headset to bring the price under $20, we are offering $2.95 shipping to U.S.-based addresses.

What can you do with your Guitar Guru headset? For starters, you could interact with some of the songs featured on Guitar Hero. Why do we recommend an official Guitar Guru headset? Guitar Guru features voice command functionality for the PC, so using a headset allows you to keep your hands on your guitar while you’re learning how to play your song. We tested a bunch of different headsets for Guitar Guru yet one stood out among all the brands we tested. This Plantronics headset offers noise-canceling, excellent sound quality, and typically ships in one business day.

So what are you waiting for? Get your Guru on and order yours today!

American Idol Finalists Announced Next Week!

Things are heating up on American Idol. This week the contestants performed in groups of eight singing songs like Don’t Stop by Fleetwood Mac and I Want You Back by The Jackson 5. We have a big Queen fan here in the office, so she really enjoyed the performance of Somebody To Love by Queen, which was also featured in the movie Ella Enchanted. (Anne Hathaway got to sing the song for some partying giants.) Another song that stood out for us was Mercy by Duffy.

Do you know how challenging these songs are? Remember that difficulty is very subjective, which is one of the reasons why you can write reviews of the songs you love to play. Watch for a post about that next week before we get into more American Idol.

Whether you or your kids enjoy Marvel, DC Comics or other comic book companies like Boom Studios and Dark Horse Comics, it’s hard to miss the appeal of the superhero.

Of course, there are several reasons why we’re drawn to superheroes and superheroines. Whether it’s their super powers or their ability to fight crime, the modern superhero seems to be depicted a bit differently than the heroes of old. Take Mr. Incredible, for example. Instead of wondering whether or not he will ever grow old or get married, we watch him settle down with his wife, Elastigirl, and empathize with his struggles working a day job. In place of Mr. Incredible rescuing his demure wife and innocent kids, we cheer as the family of Incredibles work together to defeat Syndrome.

Sheet music for superhero movies and TV shows also seems to have evolved over time. Take the theme song from The Incredibles, for example. Dubbed “The Incredits,” this jazzy theme song has a very upbeat feel. The Glory Days is another recognizable song that you might recall from The Incredibles Soundtrack. Written by Michael Giacchino, sheet music for The Incredibles (Score) seems to have come a long way since we first listened to superhero theme songs from when they were first introduced. We turned to the blogosphere and found a comic aficionado who wrote a really interesting post about the first superhero TV shows. Here’s an interesting quote from the article:

The first wave of superhero movies were mostly shorts and serials. As far as I can tell this wave started in the early ’40s and continued, with gaps, until Superman and the Mole Men in 1951. Then that was it for superhero movies for a long time; the only one I could find between Superman and the Mole Men and Superman: The Movie in 1978 was the 1966 movie based on the Batman TV show. Superman and the Mole Men was also the predecessor for the first superhero TV show, The Adventures of Superman which ran from ‘52 through ‘58. –SOURCE: Legion Abstract Blog

Superman. Batman. “V.” Mr. Incredible. No matter who your favorite superhero is, they all seem to have one thing in common — they are truly “super.” No matter what their appeal is to you, one thing is certain: superheroes (and superheroines) continue to be popular. From a musical perspective, it’s interesting to watch the evolution of how much emphasis has been placed on popular artists and musicians to create a superhero soundtrack that works.

Take V for Vendetta, for example, and its use of classical music. The 1812 Overture in E Flat, Opus 49 by Tchaikovsky was integrated into the graphic novel-turned-film “V for Vendetta.” Based on the graphic novel written by Alan Moore, both the songs Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the more contemporary Street Fighting Man made it into the movie — but interestingly enough I wasn’t able to find them on the official soundtrack.

While writing this post, we found a few other superhero and superheroine theme songs that you might enjoy playing. (They also might be great inspiration to get your kids to practice, too!)

Sheet Music for Songs used in Superhero Films and TV Shows

Can you find your favorite superhero or superheroine in this list? Which comic book character do you enjoy following and why?

IRON MAN — Of course, who can forget Iron Man, summer’s blockbuster hit that made the song, Iron Man by Black Sabbath, epic.

SUPERMAN — The theme song from Superman is probably one of the most memorable theme songs for me, next to Can you Read my Mind? from the Superman Movie.

BATMAN — New to Musicnotes.com this year is a fresh take on Batman, sheet music for The Dark Knight. Of course, who can forget the theme song for the Batman TV show?

INDIANA JONES: Many of us cheered when we heard the theme song from Indiana Jones in this summer’s release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

SPIDERMAN: While we have sheet music for the Spiderman movies, I think the most recognizable tune is the theme song from Spiderman TV Show

INCREDIBLE HULK: There have been two films now for the green giant, but who can forget the theme song from Incredible Hulk TV show?

CATWOMAN: The song Same Direction by Hoobastank was integrated into the contemporary soundtrack for the movie Catwoman, starring Halle Berry.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: One of my favorite superheroines, I think fondly of the girl with the stake who slays vampires. Another contemporary take on what a superheroine should be, every time I hear the theme song from Buffy the Vampire Slayer I have to smile. I was surprised to see that we have music from the episode where Buffy and her friends sing their way around Sunnydale. In this collection of sheet music from Buffy, I’d have to say that the song written by Joss Whedon called Walk Through the Fire is outstanding.

TRANSFORMERS: What I’ve Done by Linkin Park was one of several songs added to the Transformers movie soundtrack. Bumblebee, who first started out as a VW bug in the original TV show and was later transformed into a Chevy Camaro, communicates through music in the movie. How many songs can you recognize that he “speaks”? We also have the theme song for Sam and Mikaela. Before It’s Too Late by The Goo Goo Dolls is definitely their song.

BARTMAN: When I was writing this post, one of my team members reminded me that Bart Simpson was a superhero once. Do you remember Bartman from The Simpson’s Movie?

X-MEN: Whether you enjoyed X-Men III: the Last Stand or not, it’s hard to imagine the films without the official theme song from X-Men.

LARA CROFT: Lara Croft is one more of my favorite superheroines, because I view her to be a “capable” superheroine who is almost a more contemporary, female version of Indiana Jones. I enjoy listening to music from the Lara Croft soundtracks like this song: Pandora’s Box from Lara Croft: Cradle of Life.

MIGHTY MOUSE: I remember watching re-runs of this as a kid. Here I come to save the day! The Mighty Mouse theme song is a lot of fun to sing and play!

ELEKTRA: Another superheroine film with a lot of popular artists, Elektra had a lot of “deep” moments in the film with music to match. One of the songs played in the movie Elektra was Breathe No More by Evanescence.

DAREDEVIL: Of course, you can’t talk about Elektra without talking about Daredevil.
My Immortal by Evanescence was played in the movie Daredevil. It seems that Elektra and Daredevil have more than just a story to share.

HARRY POTTER: Is Harry Potter a hero? Well, in every film (and book) he strives to defeat Voldemort. We’ve watched him fall down, only to get back up again to fight for what’s right. While Harry may not be a hero in the traditional sense, he certainly is to fans around the world. Probably the most recognizable song in our sheet music for the movies, is the theme song from Harry potter called Hedwig’s Theme.

WATCHMEN: While the soundtrack and film haven’t yet been released, the web continues to be buzzing about this superhero film based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore. We have sheet music for the Watchmen trailer, and we’ll definitely keep an eye out for more music.

We hope you enjoyed this look into sheet music and songs from superhero movies, and we encourage you to let us know what you think. Thanks for reading, and until next time…stay “InTune”!

Many of us here really enjoy watching television through http://www.hulu.com.(1) The best part about Hulu? It offers a ton of free, black-and-white tv shows from the days of early television. One of the shows that Hulu features is the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series. If you’ve ever seen it, you’ll notice that Alfred Hitchcock Presents has a very, creepy opening sequence where familiar music plays in the background while Hitchcock’s portrait is displayed ominously on a blank screen.

Well, believe it or not that song in the background is entitled, "Funeral March for a Marionette." This song was written by French composer Charles Francois Gounod who lived in the 1800s. You may not instantly recognize Gounod’s name, but his compositions range from the opera Faust (which was based on Goethe’s play) to his work on Ave Maria. I think it’s pretty interesting that a song composed in the mid-1850s was used almost a century later for a black-and-white TV show in the 1950s.

We have a lot of other creepy Halloween sheet music downloads from old TV shows, too. The Addams Family theme song, The Twilight Zone theme song and The Munsters theme song are a small part of our Halloween sheet music collection. An obscure old movie reference that you might also be interested in is the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. This song, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, has been transcribed several times. Do you recognize where you’ve heard it before? If you guessed the opening sequence in Disney’s Fantasia released in 1940, you guessed right!
