Corinne Bailey Rae | The Sea | Sheet MusicCorinne Bailey Rae, soul-jazz singer and infamous Loiner (a person who hails from Leeds!) has returned after a two-year hiatus with her new album “The Sea,” the follow-up to her 2006 eponymous debut album.

Bailey Rae found success both in the UK and in the USA with the feel good hit “Put Your Records On,” which, for many, became the pop anthem of 2006, and the languid ballad “Like A Star.” Her self-titled album “Corinne Bailey Rae” went straight to number one in the UK album charts and sold over a million copies in the US. After a whirlwind year of touring and achieving phenomenal success, including 4 Grammy Award nominations for her solo work, Bailey Rae ended on a high, headlining the Jazzworld Stage at Glastonbury Festival 2007. Sadly, this high was shattered by the death of her husband in early 2008.

Corinne returns with a new album entitled “The Sea,” an openly more serious second album that has been greeted with much critical acclaim for her artistic growth. Some quarters have drawn comparisons with Jeff Buckley to her new music. The album charts Bailey Rae’s journey through her grief and tragic loss, never offering any answers but encouraging the listener to find “beauty and grace even in the darkness.”

Album highlights include the hauntingly beautiful opening track and first single from the album, “Are You Here,” the poignant “I’d Do It All Again,” the funky “The Blackest Lily,” the sweetly nostalgic-yet-upbeat “Paris Nights/New York Mornings,” and title track “The Sea.”

Irish Sheet Music | Musicnotes.comIn honour of St. Patrick’s Day on 17th March, we decided to take a look at the wealth of rich and varied artists Ireland has given us over the years.

With a musical heritage that encompasses folk, pop, rock, blues, soul and punk, the Emerald Isle has launched many significant musicians. Here’s a selection of some our favourite bands and performers:

The Chieftains

Grammy Award-winning group The Chieftains were formed in Dublin in 1962 after they met up to record an instrumental folk album. At the time, this was a rare and groundbreaking approach to traditional Irish music as their peers were largely vocal folk acts. Their popularity grew throughout the 1960s and they played their first US tour in 1972. After receiving an Oscar for their contribution to the soundtrack for the 1975 Kubrick film BARRY LYNDON, their fame around the globe grew. In 1983, they were invited to visit China and became the first group to play on the Great Wall. They collaborated with Van Morrison in 1986 on the album “Irish Heartbeat,” which was well-received by critics and went on to receive a Grammy Award nomination (one of their 18 nominations for this award).

Their best-selling album “The Long Black Veil” featured another successful collaboration with Van Morrison who provided the vocals on the track Have I Told You Lately, which won a Grammy Award in 1996. This album also featured performances from Sting, The Rolling Stones and Sinead O’ Connor. In 2002, The Chieftains won the BBC 2 Folk Award for Lifetime Achievement for their contributions to folk music; they continue to tour and record today.

Rory Gallagher

According to the Rory Gallagher official website, this Irish rock and blues maestro was inspired by a TV appearance of Elvis to pick up a guitar and become a musician at a young age. After playing with various bands in Ireland throughout the early 1960s, he formed the group Taste in 1967 and found success at the Marquee Club, where they came to the attention and admiration of John Lennon, amongst others. Taste split in 1970 and Rory went on to a hugely successful solo career. He played with several of his musical heroes including The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Jerry Lee Lewis and Albert King. Rory toured and recorded extensively up until the mid-1990s when he became seriously ill whilst on tour in Holland. Sadly, he passed away due to complications following an organ transplant in 1995 at aged just 47.

A talented multi-instrumentalist and enormously influential artist (it is reported that he inspired Brian May of Queen to create his unique sound), his albums have sold over 30,000,000 copies worldwide. He was most renowned for his epic live performances and in honour of this there is an international tribute festival held in his birth town, Ballyshannon, every year. You can visit the official festival website for more information.

Guitarists will love our selection of Rory Gallagher guitar tab on Musicnotes.com.

Van Morrison

A musician from a young age, Van Morrison formed the group Them in 1963. They had several hits; their rendition of Baby Please Don’t Go marked their breakthrough into the U.K. top ten. Van Morrison left the band in 1966 to embark on a solo career. The following year he released his most enduring hit Brown Eyed Girl, which remains a classic today. Musicnotes.com has arrangements of this title available for Piano, Vocal, Guitar, Guitar Tab, Bass Tab and Bb Instrument Solo.

In 1968, Van Morrison released what many consider to be his greatest work to date, the album “Astral Weeks” and followed this with a string of successful albums, amongst them “Moondance” and “Tupelo Honey.” In addition to his substantial repertoire of recorded work, Morrison is renowned for his live performances, which have been described as “transcendental.” His musical style encompasses many genres and is virtually impossible to define as he is such an innovator. However, Morrison defines himself as a soul singer.

U2

U2 was formed by four schoolmates in Dublin in 1976. Their musical style has evolved over the years, starting out with post-punk influences, moving into rock and more recently into dance-tinged pop/rock. Arguably one of the biggest bands in the world, U2 have a hugely successful music career coupled with a strong association with campaigning and fund-raising. They have produced 12 studio albums and won an impressive 22 Grammy Awards. In 2005, they were admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; their most recent album “No Line On The Horizon” was released in early 2009.

We have an extensive range of U2’s back-catalogue available at musicnotes.com, including sheet music for their recent album. Visit Musicnotes.com to find U2 sheet music and guitar tab.

The Corrs

Musical siblings, The Corrs, formed their Celtic pop and rock group in the early 1990s in Dundalk, Ireland. After a performance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., they were given a support slot on Celine’s Dion’s tour that broke them into the mainstream and paved the way for the success of their first album “Forgiven, Not Forgotten.”

As well as being successful musicians, The Corrs are renowned for their charity work and in 2005 they were made honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of their philanthropic activities. The Corrs are currently on hiatus while two of the band members raise their family.

You can download all available guitar tab and sheet music for The Corrs on Musicnotes.com.

Boyzone

Boyzone was formed in 1993 by music manager Louis Walsh who reportedly wanted to create the Irish Take That. After holding open auditions in Dublin, the 300 applicants, one of which included the actor Colin Farrell, were eventually whittled down to 5. Their breakthrough came in 1995 with the release of the cover of the Osmond’s classic Love Me For A Reason, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts.

Their second album, 1997’s “A Different Beat,” secured their reputation as successor’s to Take That’s crown, giving them two number one singles and going triple platinum in the UK. After disbanding in 2000 to pursue solo careers, the boys reunited in 2008, released a compilation album and have been touring. They are due to release an album of new material this year; the album will be dedicated to the memory of former band-mate Stephen Gately who sadly passed away in October last year.

Sheet Music for Muse – The Resistance Album

Sheet Music for Muse – The Resistance Album

Posted on Feb 22, 2010 by catherine.

The Muse boys returned in late 2009 with their fifth studio album, The Resistance. Their much-anticipated follow-up to 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations has been greeted with critical acclaim for its scope, grandeur and classical musical influences. It sold around 148,000 copies in the UK in the first week alone, reaching the number one slot in the album charts in 19 countries and getting to number 3 in the U.S. Billboard charts.

The Resistance marked a landmark for the band as it is the first of their albums that they produced themselves, an accomplishment that was celebrated when they collected UK Single of the Year at the recent Music Producers Guild Awards for the first single from the album which was entitled Uprising. We have the exclusive, band-approved sheet music for Uprising available in a piano, vocal and guitar arrangement and guitar tab. The piano sheet music arrangements offer chords for guitarists and separate the vocal line from the piano accompaniment.

Although they lost out on the best British Band gong at the recent BRIT Awards to fellow rockers Kasabian, they have been nominated in 10 categories at the forthcoming NME awards, including Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album, and Best Album Artwork amongst others. When you hear tracks such as the Depeche Mode-esque “Undisclosed Desires,” an overt homage to rock legend Queen entitled “United States Of Eurasia (+ Collateral Damage),” and the guitar riff-heavy “MK Ultra” it’s easy to see why!

Another highlight from the album is the three-part, thirteen-minute Exogenesis Symphony which has received the most plaudits from the critics. You can sing and play along with our Muse sheet music arranged for piano, vocal and guitar. You can check out Muse sheet music and guitar tab for Resistance here:

Their crown as current Kings of the UK Rock & Pop scene was confirmed when it was announced Muse will headline the prestigious Saturday night slot on the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. If you’re planning on going to Glastonbury this year, be sure to take a look at these highlights from Muse’s back-catalogue of sheet music so you can sing-along when they’re up on stage. These arrangements vary from guitar tab to saxophone solos, so be sure to review the sheet music arrangements closely.

In this week’s wrap-up, we talk about how talent shows are inspiring musicians everywhere to sing or play their instrument and provide you with some sheet music suggestions. We also reveal the winner of our own “talent” show, the Musicnotes.com YouPerform Contest for March 2009.

Britain’s Got Talent! Do you?

As we mentioned earlier this week in our press release entitled Susan Boyle Phenomenon Resonates in Sheet Music, “Britain’s Got Talent” singing sensation Susan Boyle has had a definite impact on sheet music. You’ve been so inspired by Susan Boyle’s performance of I Dreamed a Dream, that this single song from Les Miserables sheet music is one of your top downloads on Musicnotes.com.

That’s not the only performer that you’ve enjoyed, though. Competing for a chance to perform in front of the Queen, this past week Shaheen Jafargholi started singing the song Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Simon Cowell stopped him after the first few bars. Switching to the song Who’s Lovin’ You by the Jackson Five, this twelve-year old received a standing ovation. (Watch the video of Shaheen singing.) Another sensation was a music teacher playing an alto saxophone version of the song Somewhere from West Side Story named Julian Smith.

Looks like this talent show is inspiring more than just singers to offer their music to the world. How about you? What do you play?

Talent Show American Idol Continues to Impress You

Have you been following American Idol? This week was a big heart-breaker for Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds as they were eliminated from the show. Many of the songs sung by Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and all your favorite singers have inspired you to play the songs they’ve performed. Featured songs from our selection of American Idol sheet music for Season Eight include:

Whether you buy sheet music from us or not, we hope you pick up your favorite instrument or microphone and get inspired to play!

March 2009 YouPerform Contest Winners!

It seems like only yesterday we asked you to vote on the twelve entries to March’s Musicnotes.com YouPerform Contest. We have contacted the first place, second place and third place winners today, and have invited them to share with us a few words about their musical background and performance. We’ll offer you an update next week when we’re able to sit down with our lucky contestants.

We’d like to announce that your favorite performance is of the girl who played the piano and the hornpipe. Choosing the song “Bunessan,” here is the video of the March 2009 YouPerform Contest Winner for Musicnotes.com. Who placed second and third? Find out early next week when we offer you an inside look at our own musical contestants who are definitely talented!

The contest deadline for April is rapidly approaching and we’re really excited to see who’s going to enter. We hope you’re considering adding your contest entry, because if we receive a minimum of ten entries — we’ll give more away! Just yesterday we posted that:

Effective for March’s contest and any month going forward, we will award first, second and third place prizes provided we have a minimum of ten entries. For first place the YouPerform contest winner will receive a gift certificate in the amount of $100, second place will receive a $50 certificate, and third place will receive a certificate for $25.

What are you waiting for? We hope you’re so inspired, you’re ready to show the world what musical talent you’re hiding!

Susan Boyle Phenomenon Resonates in Sheet Music

Susan Boyle Phenomenon Resonates in Sheet Music

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 by Bill Aicher (Director of Marketing).

Madison, WI – April 20, 2009 – Musicnotes, Inc., the market leader in downloadable sheet music, announced today that Susan Boyle, the singer who stunned viewers the world over with her performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” on the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ TV show, has influenced sales of sheet music as well.

“We have never encountered anything like this in the history of Musicnotes,” indicated Marketing Director, Bill Aicher. “This one song is even outselling songs from the hit movies ‘Twilight’ and ‘Hannah Montana: the Movie.’”

Sheet music sales for “I Dreamed a Dream” have surpassed sales for the Miley Cyrus song “The Climb” from ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie.’ In absence of the record-breaking popularity of “I Dreamed a Dream,” “The Climb” would be setting sheet music sales records of its own.

In addition to “I Dreamed a Dream,” Boyle’s first recorded song, the Arthur Hamilton standard “Cry Me a River,” is also rising in Musicnotes.com’s list of top downloads due to the Boyle’s recent Internet stardom.

“Shows like ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘American Idol’ are having a definite impact on more than just fans of the show,” commented Aicher. “These talent shows are inspiring musicians and singers as well.”

About Musicnotes: Musicnotes, Inc. offers an online catalog of almost 100,000 digital sheet music titles, built on the strength of content agreements with Alfred Publishing, EMI Music Publishing, Faber Music Ltd, Sony/ATV Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Disney Music Publishing, peermusic, Word Music, EMI Christian, Bug Music and many others. Musicnotes is included in Internet Retailer’ list of the Top 500 Online Retailers and was recently selected by Internet Retailer as a “Hot 100″ site for 2009.

Have you heard Susan Boyle singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables? Earlier this week we sent our Twitter followers a “tweet” about Susan Boyle. We had said:

twitter_logo_sMusicnotes.com LogoMorning music lovers! Here’s a wonderful story about a singer on “Britain’s Got Talent” TV show. http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/92464. 8:45 a.m. April 13th

Just a few days after our “tweet,” the story of this forty-seven year old, unemployed singer from West Lothian in the UK has circulated the globe faster than you can say “I Dreamed a Dream.” A fansite located at http://www.susan-boyle.com has dubbed the phenomenon with the catch phrase “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” It seems no one expected this talented singer to sing as well as well as she has.

According to a post on the WSJ dubbed the Susan Boyle Bubble, the video showing her performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables has been seen well over twelve million times.

Susan Boyle’s performance on the show Britain’s Got Talent was an endearing one to watch, because her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream is very inspiring. Not only did she pick “the” right song to audition, but it was sung so beautifully many people have had an emotional reaction to the performance.

Here’s a video of Susan Boyle singing “I Dreamed a Dream.

We hope that this fantastic performance will inspire you to make music a part of your day. If you’re interested in playing or singing Susan Boyle’s audition piece, visit Musicnotes.com for I Dreamed a Dream sheet music from Les Miserables.

BREAKING UPDATE: Susan Boyle’s first recording performance was for charity in 1999. Susan sang the blues song Cry Me A River. Here’s a link to the Susan singing Cry Me A River on YouTube! Enjoy!

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on Susan Boyle’s performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” in the comments below! Have a wonderful day!

gramophoneDid you watch The Grammy Awards last night? We did, and were very excited to watch your favorite bands and musicians take the stage in a spectacular show. Some of the highlights from this year’s Grammy’s include: Adele winning both the Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award (for Chasing Pavements) as well as many awards won by Robert Plant and Coldplay.

You’ll recognize a lot of your favorite songs on the list of Grammy Award winners: Ne-Yo won the award for Best R & B Male Vocal Performance for his version of Miss Independent. You may recall that American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson had performed that song as the second single from her debut album “Thankful.” The song Viva La Vida by Coldplay won the Grammy for Song of the Year, as well as the award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. The instrumental song I Dreamed There Was No War by The Eagles also won for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. John Mayer, who continues to be a Musicnotes.com customer favorite year after year, took home a few awards. The songs Gravity by John Mayer and Say both won awards as well.

It should come as no surprise that veteran musician Robert Plant won several awards, including the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals award for the song Rich Woman by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.

The night was big for sheet music from movies and Broadway shows as well. Down to Earth from Wall-E won Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media and the Tony award-winning musical In the Heights won for Best Musical Show Album. One very interesting win were songs featured from the Dark Knight, which took home the Best Score Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media award.

Free Music Playlist – UK Bands in Today’s Monday Melodies

Posted on Nov 17, 2008 by Monica.

Muse. The Verve. Kasabian. For decades, UK bands have influenced and shaped the face of rock-n-roll by giving us songs that surpass any country’s musical borders.

In today’s Monday Melodies free playlist, we’re happy to bring you memorable music from UK bands. Many of these songs incorporate piano, guitar and drums to create more of an acoustic feel to them. Tonight by Hard-Fi, Sunburn by Muse and (of course) many of Coldplay’s songs are great examples this concept. In Sunburn, for example, the song begins with a series of piano arpeggios, vocals and drums. As the vocalist continues, more and more instruments are added to intensify the effect of the lyrics to create a distinct sound.

Although we’ve featured songs from thirty-five UK bands in this Monday’s free playlist, we have sheet music for a lot more UK bands on Musicnotes.com than you might think. We hope you enjoy listening to this week’s Monday Melodies playlist as we take you over to the UK for some great tunes. Feel free to chime in and let us know what songs you enjoy.

Have a wonderful Monday, and thanks for listening!
