The release of The Beatles: Rock Band game is a technological wonder. In order to fit the songs into the Rock Band format, designers and technicians were required to separate a low quality, single track into high quality, multiple tracks that could be played and listened to. For the first time in a music game, players will also be able to harmonize their vocals, to sound more like The Beatles signature performances. The look and feel of the game is pretty amazing; be sure to check out the latest video game trailer for The Beatles: Rock Band. Fans might also be interested to know that Yoko Ono was part of the design process for the game; she offered her artistic input and feedback to ensure that the look and feel was authentic.

In this edition of Rock Band, players will follow The Beatles along a musical journey, stopping by places like the Ed Sullivan show or experience a psychedelic dream in an Abbey Road Dreamscape. The game’s historical reflection on The Beatles allows players to sing along and jam with songs like the challenging Good Morning Good Morning or the popular Can’t Buy Me Love, so they can get the most out of this timeless band’s music.

Besides the original set list of forty-five songs, players will be able to interact with previously unseen video footage, three-part harmonies, rare photographs, and a comprehensive biography. For more songs, over thirty additional titles will be available for download. Released in three sets through December, each song will be available to play or listen to.

Blue Dragon is an epic role-playing game that centers on a young boy named Shu and several of his friends. These unlikely heroes possess the power to control phantom shadows that mirror the actions of their masters, giving Shu and his comrades miraculous strength and magical powers. The warriors can create and develop their combat styles by utilizing different types of Shadow Change, including Sword, Assassin, and Power Magic. Shu and his friends must use the shadows as weapons and wield their skills to save their world from impending doom. Blue Dragon sheet music offers theme songs for the main characters, active fight songs and beautifully-orchestrated background music. Songs include Giant Mechat, Revival of the Ancients and the Blue Dragon main theme and were composed by Nobuo Uematsu. Earlier this month, the video game Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was released for the PS2. The story for this video game takes place in between Kingdom Hearts I and Kingdom Hearts II.

In a recent article from Yahoo! entitled "As music industry stumbles, musicians turn to games," the article addresses how great songwriters are taking their talents and enhancing the music in video games. For people who play video games, each song means something a little different to each of them. Video game music highlights and enhances in-game video, "boss battles" where your hero will fight an epic battle, or spectacular moments in game. Lighter music tends to accentuate "safe" moments in the game where a character isn’t threatened by enemies; grand, majestic minor keys are sometimes used to bring a sense of urgency during epic battles. An example of great video game sheet music is the Final Fantasy video game series.

Final Fantasy features songs like the theme song from Final Fantasy VII, 1000 words from Final Fantasy X-2 and Song of Memories from Final Fantasy IX. 1000 words was a powerful moment in the game Final Fantasy IX and one of my favorite video game songs.

Yuna, one of the main characters, is a heroine first featured in Final Fantasy X. (We feature several songs about Yuna in our sheet music for Final Fantasy X.) In this best-selling sequel, Yuna transforms into a magical songstress by donning a dress sphere that had belonged to an ancient singer named Lenne over a 1,000 years ago. The song 1,000 words is a song where Yuna is trying to musically convince the people of Spira (their world) to put aside their differences. At the high point in the song, composed by Takahito Eguchi and Noriko Matsueda, the ghost of Lenne’s tragic character escapes from the sphere and sings with Yuna in a plea for peace and understanding. 

Halo theme songs continue to be popular and in-demand as well. Did you know we’ve added the song One Final Effort from Halo 3? Composed by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori in 12:8 time to be played majestically, you can almost feel the anticipation as your hero faces its foes (Which, in this case, are two Scarabs).

If you do enjoy songs for kids, Konami just announced Dance, Dance Revolution: Disney Groove for the Wii with a tentative release date of March 2009. Musicnotes.com features over 250 Disney songs for digital download and over 275 Disney sheet music books so we expect that there might be some crossover between the songs in the upcoming video game and what we already have on our site. My prediction is that we’ll probably see Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid, Reflection by Christina Aguilera from Mulan and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins.

Whether you like to play video games or not, it’s clear that theme songs from video games are infused with a lot of musical and songwriting talent. More often than not, there’s quite a bit of crossover from popular songs throughout the decades, which is a testament to the songwriter’s ability to create a song that’s so "in tune" with itself it can be sung, played and heard over and over again — even in a video game.

Believe it or not, you may already be playing some video game music if you enjoy Disney’s songs, because there is often a lot of crossovers between Disney movies and best-selling video games like the characters from Shrek, Cars, Ratatouille and more!
